Bidimensional Polyiodide Netting Stabilized by a Cu(II) Macrocyclic Complex

Iodine-dense polyiodide phases are interesting materials for a number of potential uses, including batteries and solid-state conductors. The incorporation transition metal cations is considered promising way to enhance the stability, tune properties, influence architecture polyiodides. However, several metals, Cu(II), may suffer redox processes, which generally make them not compatible with I2/I− couple. Herein L, simple derivative cyclen, proposed as Cu(II) ligand capable protecting +2 oxidation state even in presence With step by approach, we report crystal structure free L; then present spectrophotometric verification complex stoichiometry, formation kinetic DMF solution, together binding mode elucidation via XRD analysis [Cu(L)Cl]ClO4∙CH3CN crystals; afterwards, stability CuL I− demonstrated where Cu:L:I− ternary complex, rather than reduction Cu(I), observed; lastly, crystals prepared, affording [Cu(L)I]2I3I5 structure. This layered highly peculiar due its chiral arrangement, opening further perspective engineering phases.
